Hello girls! Welcome to 2012! This year, we have a new teacher who will join the Netball Team! And she is Mrs Vijay! She will be in-charge of the P4s.

As for the Junior and Senior team, there will be a slight change. Ms D will be taking the P5s, and Miss Tan will be taking the P6s.

We will be using this blog as an update to all the competitions and trainings!

In the meantime, train hard and make us proud!

Our netball blog has been suffering a 'natural death' due to the lack of writers to post match updates. Anyway, I will skip all the match reports in the earlier rounds and go straight to the semi-finals.

Unfortunately, our Juniors probably have 'over-achieved' and their 'lucky' run in the nationals was finally stopped by the efficient, aggressive and speedy opponents, St Margaret's Pri. The Juniors made too many unforced errors evident by their poor midfield play by the Centre, Wing Attack and Goal Attack. To step up to the senior level, we may have to relook at their positions again to create more balance in the team. Personally, I feel Zay Hua (GA) should play Centre...Jean should play Wing Attack. Probably need to find a new Goal Attack...Well, let's sleep on this issue first...We have one whole year to train for next year's competition.

What a mouth-watering semi-final!?! For those of you who were present at the match, you must have nearly suffered from cardiac arrest in the match between TKP and Fengshan. It was neck and neck in the first two quarters. TKP seniors have never defeated Fengshan Pri in their two attempts. One in last year's national final and also this year's East Zone Final. Nevertheless, the seniors dug deep and were leading by two points in the third and added another three in the 4th to win the match 29-24. For those cynics out there, this victory proves that if you're willing to work hard, 'anything is possible' or I quote from the addidas advertisement 'IMPOSSIBLE IS NOTHING'. All the players played superbly from GK right down to GS. Special mention to our Goal Shooter, Debby Larissa who was in menacing form today...her shot accuracy must have been in the 90% range. Can't really recall any shots she missed in the game!

p.s. Calling all TKP Ex-netballers! Please come down this wednesday 3pm at Bedok Sports Hall to witness history being made - our seniors attempting to be the first team in TKP to win the Senior National Championship! As you know, our only other national championship won was in 2008 but it was in the junior division. As for the senior division, we have lost three senior finals, one in 2005, one in 2007 and last one in 2009.

Match Report on Juniors' second quarter final match against Junyuan Pri

Today, was our match with Junyuan Primary School. When we got to Kallang Netball Centre,we did some stretching, goal linepasses, center passes and some new drills before the match with Junyuan. After that, Mr Njoo briefed us and appointed us our positions. C = Zay Hua WA= Jean GA= Linnet GS= Celine WD= Nadya GD = Juana Gk= Nicole. Then, we did the TKP whoosh and started the game.

On the first quarter, we scored 9 and Junyuan did not score any points. In the next quarter, the score was 9-2. What we did not expect was the 2 shots scored by our opponents. Then, on the third quarter, the score was 6-0 and the last quarter we scored 9 points and Junyuan did not score.

Zay Hua , our centre , was the superstar of the day. has to run the whole court for 4 quarters and she intercepted most of the balls. Celine, our Goal Shooter has finally hit the purple patch. Thanks to her shooting during the weekend, she scored most of the points and did not miss a single shot.

For winning today's match against Junyuan, we will play against Whitesands to determine wether we will get into the Semi- finals or not. I hope that we will continue to work harder to improve on our skills for the next round.

Our 4th East Zone match is with Tao Nan Primary. The bus came on time and we had enough time to warm up at Kallang Netball Centre before the match started. We did some stretching, Goal line passes, Center passes and Final Thirds.After that, Mr Njoo briefed us on our strategy and what he expected us to do on court. Then the match was about to start. We did the TKP whoosh and started the match.

On the first quarter, we did not play so well. We had only scored 7-0. But Mr Njoo expected us to score 10-0. On the second quarter of the game we led in 7 goals and Tao Nan led in 2 goals. On the next quarter, we score 8 and they scored 1. In the last quarter, the score was 9-1. We did not expect them to score the 4 goals.

For winning today's match we will proceed on to challenge with Junyuan primary school to determine wether we can make it to the Semi - finals.Today, we all knew that this was not our best performance.We told ourselves that we will work harder during training and when we are doing netball drills. All of us know that we can improve on how we play in the next East Zone match.

TKP Juniors vs CHIJ Katong 38-2

It was a good start for our third netball east zone match as the bus came on time and we had more time to warm up at Kallang netball centre.We did some goal line passes and loads of stretching before the match. After Mr Njoo briefed us on what he wanted us to do during the match, we got together and did the cheer, after which we started the game.

The 1st quarter did not go as well as expected and we only scored 7 against CHIJ Katong, but as the game carried on, the team started playing better. In the 2nd quarter we scored a total of 11 and in the 3rd quarter we had a score of 11(again). What we did not expect was two shots scored by our opponents in the last quarter.

Today Jean, our WA or sometimes centre was the star player of our team, running from place to place intercepting most of the passes joining another of our highly-rated player, Zay Hua who has so far kept the team together with her consistent performances so far in the tournament. Furthermore, Celine our main GS has finally hit a purple patch, she scores the majority of the points in the match, at times, she was shooting from the edge of the goal circle that many of us could not believe it would go in! Kudos to her for practising shooting during the weekends. Let's hope the other shooters will do likewise and post a higher shot percentage and contribute to the team's overall points.

For winning all three first round matches, our school will now proceed to the quarter finals as one of the four group champions. After the first round, teams that have stood out in the tournament are Fengshan Pri, White Sands Pri, St Hilda's and Pasir Ris Pri. Including us, there are actually 5 teams vying for a top four positions that will enable us to qualify for the nationals in term 3. I certainly hope we will continue to work harder and improve our physique and skills for the next round. THERE ARE NO MORE EASY GAMES!!!

TKP Juniors vs East View Pri 57-0

Today, we had our 2nd East Zone match with East View primary! Luckily, our bus arrived on time(unlike monday), and so Mr Njoo did not have to be nervous again.When we got to Kallang Netball Centre, we first did some stretches, followed by some drills and then we practised our Centre pass and Goaline pass. Mr Njoo then briefed us about what we should do in the game, and then we went to prepare for our match.

The 1st quarter went well, but we could have done much better. There were a few mistakes by some players, but they made up by doing better later on in the game. We could have scored more if our shooters had been sharper. The score at that time was 14-0. We prevented the opponents from scoring even one goal because of all the interceptions that we made. In the 2nd quarter, we improved as there were more interceptions and less mistakes. We scored 11 points, thus making the score 25-0. Due to our strong defense in the 3rd quarter, we didn't let the opponents score a single point, while we scored 14 points. Now came the tension. The score was 39-0, while we had to score 50-0. Not only did we have to score 11 points, but we had to keep up the strong defense. We dit it! We scored 18 points, and let in 0 goals!!! The final score was 57-0! Mr Njoo said that we could have scored 60 over points if our shooters had been sharper.

One player that has shone in the game was Cherylene, our reserve Goal Shooter. At first, when she first started, she missed all those near shots. However, as the game progressed, she became better and made all her shots. Linnet and Celine, our first choice shooters had better beware as Cherylene is poised to take over their position if she continues to play like what she did. Keep up the good work!

Below is a match report on the Junior match by Meagan Chong (5 Olympism)

Our 1st East Zone match started today with Coral Primary!!! The day started with the bus arriving late and making all of us very worried especially Mr Njoo. The second thing was that we had very little warm-up to prepare for our match. :( In the end, the bus came but at 7.30 am and our match was at 8.00 am. As we were on the bus, Mr Njoo was very anxious ==> ( again ! ) and kept asking us to stay calm.

When we arrived, we did some warm-up, and the match started. The 1st quarter went OK, but not that good. Some people like Juana was dreaming thus allowing the opponent's GA to enter the goal circle and score their solitary point, but in the 2nd quarter we improved and scored 12 goals. We could have done better but our GS (Celine) and GA (Linnet) who had a lot of chances to put the ball in, didn't. I feel that our team needs to practice playing matches in the morning as we are not that comfortable playing in the morning.

Netball Camp 2010 Day 2

After a lecture by Mr Njoo at the end of the first day of camp, the juniors started the day more motivated and focussed. During the team training at 0800 hrs, the juniors worked hard practicing their down-the-line drills. It was heart-warming to see them so fired up. The team was looking good after the team training.

Next, was a lecture by renowned umpire, Vincent Ong, about the rules of the game. It was to familiarise the juniors with the rules as many were still confused with the rules. It was hilarious and fun at the same time as Vincent took them through the various rules by simulating different situations in a game. The girls had fun acting out the various infringements.

After lunch, the juniors started preparing for their friendly match against Yumin combined junior and senior team. Mr Njoo fielded Nicole as GK, Juana as GD, Britney as WD, Zay Hua as C, Jean as WA, Linnet as GA and Celine as GS in the first quarter. The girls grinded out 7-1 in the first quarter. It was a respectable scoreline. Next, Mr Njoo substituted Britney with Nadya for the second quarter. This time, the opponents were much biggger as more of the senior members of the Yumin Pri team played. It was tough as the bigger players were aggressive. The second quarter score was 2-4 in favour of Yumin and the total score was 9-5 (TKP still leading). The juniors were lectured for their inability to finish off their chances and let the more physical Yumin Pri to dictate the game. In the 3rd quarter, the juniors gave their all and ended the quarter with a score of 8-1 and a total of 17-6. In the final quarter, the juniors were up against the P6 girls and their size superiority showed when the juniors had many turnovers as a result of their inability to pass the ball quickly and there were many 'held ball' decisions against us. Furthermore, the juniors were fast losing their stamina and were always second best in terms of chasing the loose ball in the court. Finally they lost 9-1 to their opponents. The final score of 18-15 in favour of TKP was a great result. However, the collapse of the team in the final quarter was enough to sound out the alarm bells for Mr Njoo as he prepare the team for the East Zone. I'm sure he will be able to work out some of the kinks in the team before the competition starts. Come on Juniors, let's work hard and achieve our target of being the East Zone Champion!!!

Netball Camp 2010

Netball Camp 2010 15th - 16th March

With the impending East Zone Inter-Primary Netball Championship a week away, the juniors kickstarted their March holidays with a 'netball camp'. It was a good opportunity for their coach, Mr Njoo, to fine-tune his final selection of players to prepare them for their first match against Coral Pri.

Day 1

The camp started with a specialised training session for defenders, mid-court and shooters. Coaching the defenders was Coach Cheryl, coaching the mid-court players was Coach Vanessa and coaching the shooters was Coach Huifen. Most of the coaches were either ex-national age-group or current national team players. Their presence certainly motivated the juniors as they lapped up everything they taught and their steady improvement could be seen after the two hour session.

Next on the agenda was a mental skills training session by Coach Victor. The juniors enjoyed the session thoroughly as they drew caricatures of themselves and wrote out their thoughts, weaknesses and strengths on butcher paper with the wide array of magic pens and crayons available! They also enjoyed the activity where they have to shout out their strengths as they passed the ball around. This was certainly one of the highlights of the first day.

After a sumptous lunch, the juniors went to KNC for team training. There, they were separated into two teams to be coached by Coach Cheryl and Coach Siew Kim. This session highlighted the juniors' weaknesses in their centre passes and the shooters' mobility in the goal circle. The day was further hampered by the drizzle that followed after an hour. The camp ended at about 5pm on the first day.

Kaki Bukit CSC Netball Carnival 2010

TKP Juniors - Overall 4th Placing

The 2010 netball season kickstarted with the Kaki Bukit Netball Carnival! It was a great opportunity for the Juniors and Seniors to know their strengths and weaknesses as compared to the other top teams. The Seniors did themselves proud by toppng their 'Group of Death' defeating top teams like St Hilda's, CHIJ OLN and St Margaret's. However, due to too many high intensity games, the seniors were exhausted and eventually lost in the final to St Margaret's Pri, whom they have beaten earlier, thus achieving overall 2nd in the tournament.

The Juniors were eagerly anticipating their matches as this tournament was their first competitive one at Junior level. They finished overall 4th placing in the tournament losing the eventual champion Evergreen Pri, 2nd place St Hilda's Pri by a solitary point and St Margaret's Pri. The positive aspect to take note was that the juniors were more superior in their match-up against St Hilda's but was let down by poor finishing by the shooters. We can only hope the Juniors will pick themselves up and continue to train harder for the upcoming Zonal competition. Come on juniors...WE MUST, WE CAN and WE WILL!!!

Our P6 netballers have just returned from their P6 cohort 3day 2night Malacca Immersion Trip cum Graduation Dinner. Our coach and form teacher, Mr Njoo, nearly suffocated from shock when he saw the netballers dressed up for the graduation ball held at the hotel ballroom. Here are some pictures taken. For your information, one of our netballers, Josephine Yeh, was the runner-up for the best dressed competition. What an achievement! It shows that girls in the sports class are intelligent, athletic and beautiful...an all-rounder!

Congratulations to all our P6 netballers! All of them have secured a place in a sec school during the recent DSA exercise. It showed the powess and the recognition the girls have achieved in the netball arena. Again, this was the 4th consecutive year the whole team has secured a place in the DSA exercise. Well, credit to Fengshan Pri, they definitely were the better team and although we were close for the first two quarters with only 3 points separating us at half time, the'quality' of their players prevailed at the end. We simply had no answers to their attacking play. I was very impressed by their two shooters!

2) Who do you think were the top three performers for the TKP Juniors?
Natasha Hogan was very consistent throughout the whole nationals and I can only say she will get better with more experience and training.

Ariqah was a menace to the Fengshan Defence with her crisp shooting and quick movements. Though one of the shortest shooters around, she was able to score the bulk of the points for us.

The third netballer would be a tie between Nadia (GD) and Debby (GS). Both of them have an inconsistent nationals tournament. However, they did play up to my expectation in the final. Hopefully, the two of them will work even harder and give Fengshan Pri a tougher fight next year!

3) Erm...what about the worst player?
Well...I would rather not answer your question but my key players Dewi (C) and Depi (WA) did have an off-day with their misplaced passes. Maybe the Fengshan players were giving them a hard time. I hope they would be able to bounce back from this and become much more fitter and tougher when they are in the senior division next year.

4) What about the seniors? You were the defending champion but you lost, why?
To tell you I was quite bitter about the defeat would have been an understatement of the year! I personally thought we were going to win after the seniors came back at 19-19 with one minute to go and it was our centre-pass. However, when the pass went to Xinghui (WA), the umpire blew for a 'held' ball. It was definitely less than 3 seconds! It totally changed the whole complexion of the game as Kellock now had the possession and of course went on to score. I don't mind losing to a better opponent as was the case against Fengshan in the Junior Finals but to lose because of a dubious decision by an umpire...It really makes me want to give up coaching netball forever.

HOwever, after thinking through...Look at sports all around us, we are constantly beseiged by bad refereeing even at the highest level. Think of the English Premier League, Think of the World Cup Finals etc. In my eyes, the seniors are my national champion! To be honest, we lost the final in the first three quarters...

5) What was the problem?
Erm...my attacking play was the problem! My shooters were stifled in the final third. They didnt know what to do. They were passing the ball aimlessly around the 'D' and their movements were all wrong. I'm gutted that they chose the last match to play like this!

6) Best players?
Jeraldine (GK) - fantastic positioning to stop the deadly Kellock GS. How many teams can restrict CHIJ KELLock from scoring less than 20 points? Well...TKP did or should ?I say Jeraldine did.

Fatin (WD) - she was a constant menace to the KEllock WA despite being much shorter. She made a couple of interceptions and was a thorn to the KEllock players all day.

Josephine (GD) - She played magnificently to complement Jeraldine. The GA could not pass all day or score. Though she was our last minute inclusion, she played with all her might! Keep it up!

7) How are you feeling?
How would you feel after losing two finals in one day? I'll be fine after a couple of days. Don't forget, we still got a bigger challenge to overcome...PSLE! Come on...LEt's work hard and get good results!

The Seniors qualified for the semi-finals too with a match in hand. Although, it was a comfortable victory, their coach, Mr Njoo, was infuriated by their lacklustre performance. He felt that the Seniors were not interested in this tournament but were more concerned about their DSA trials. There were a few who had not shown up for the games during the nationals. Let me remind the seniors that the nationals is our top priority! It was the nationals last year that gave us the opportunity to show our skills and therefore gave us the chance to DSA. So seniors, let's not forget our bread and butter...let's be focussed in this tournament and win it! Only then can we talk about DSA etc. This Monday, the seniors will be playing St Hilda's ...Let's hope the seniors can stepped up their gear and win so as to top the group!

YES! The Juniors have qualified for the semi-finals after defeating CHIJ Kellock 29-21, knocking them out of the competition at the quarter final stage. It was a titanic battle between Natasha (GK) and our opponent's GS. Everytime, the Kellock players sent a lob into the 'D', we would wait with bated breath hoping Natasha (GK) would be able to intercept the lob. True enough, Natasha did not disappoint and manage to intercept a few every quarter, enabling us to win the quarter by 3 points each time. So by the time we started the 4th quarter, we were already up by 9 points and it was almost impossible for our opponents to catch up! Our juniors also made life difficult for themselves by making many mistakes thus failing to capitalise on our good defensive work. In order to top the group, we must win our last match against Fengshan Pri (the current East Zone Champion) so as to have an easier passage to the Final. If the juniors defeat Fengshan Pri this coming Monday, they will face the weaker team in the other group and not the highly-rated St Margaret's Pri. Therefore...I sincerely hoped that the Juniors will play their best game this Monday and beat Fengshan Pri and show everyone that we are indeed the BEST in the EAST!

It was an important match for the Juniors - the first match of the quarter-finals. In order to advance to the semi-finals, the juniors need to win at least 2 matches to qualify for the semi-finals. It seemed like a rocky road ahead. However, with enough belief that they could pull it off, Mr Njoo managed to arrange a last-minute training session on the eve of the match to work out some minor tactical details.

It indeed paid off! The juniors played like demon possessed and fought for every ball. Natasha (GK) was simply superb, holding off St Hilda's best player (GS), making timely interceptions and rebounds. Then there was our tireless centre, Dewi, who played her best match in this nationals, defending well and at the same time controlling our attacking play. We have indeed witness the coming-of-age of our new centre in this game. She was fearless, fighting for every ball and when we lost possession, she tracked back and made so many interceptions that I lost count. For the first time, she made the St Hilda's Centre looked ordinary. Of course, our GA Ariqah and GS Debby also played a huge part in the victory too, tormenting the St Hilda's defenders with their good positioning and accuracy in their shooting.

Finally, the juniors are beginning to look like they could win the nationals! Credit must be given to all the players too - Depi WA, Nadia GD and Tiffany WD for their gutsy display. Also, the reserves who together with our coach, Mr Njoo, kept on believing and cheering the players on court. It was indeed a team effort and I want to encourage the juniors to keep on improving and win their next match against CHIJ Kellock to advance to the semi-finals with a game to spare! Let's go TK, Let's go!!!

One final note - REVENGE was indeed sweet!

The seniors started off sluggishly probably feeling complacent after a resounding victory in the previous match. They were soon brought down to Earth by a whole series of mistakes and inaccuracy in their shooting. Coupled with the ferocious Mr Njoo scolding at the sideline, they were even more tentative and could not get into the game.

The front 4 players - Seak Im, Corrine, Xing Hui and Rukmini were the guilty ones, displaying one of the worst performance I have seen so far this year. Mr Njoo sticked to his words and put in all the reserves in the 3rd quarter in a bid to 'wake' the more illustrous key players from their slumber. It worked!

In the 4th quarter, the key players came to life and put in shots after shots, just like snipers shooting bullets into the enemy's targets. Point after point after point, they rained torrents of shots into the net. By the time , the 4th quarter end, they have rained 15 points to add to the final score. Mr Njoo was most displeased by their lacklustre warm-ups. He cited that the players were not focussed in the warm-ups which led to their poor start. I sincerely hoped that the seniors will now know the importance of putting everything in the warm-ups so as to start well in the game. With the quarter-finals coming up, I could only hoped they have learnt their lesson!

The Seniors played much better in their second match. Though missing regulars like Jeraldine (GK) and Fatin (WD) due to the fact that they have to go for their DSA trials, the Seniors played like demon-possessed, never really missing their presence. Corrine's (GS) positional sense improved tremendously and she was scoring more than the 1st match. Their attacking play was more varied and their passes were much more accurate than before. Credit must also go to the reserves who stepped up their play and the team honestly did not felt the absence of the two key players. The return of Jamie (GD/WD) also helped the team as she was constantly sticking to her opponent and making timely interceptions. Therefore, the seniors have qualified for the Quarter-Finals with a game to spare. With the final game in the 1st round looming, I can only hope that the Seniors can go one step further and improve their gameplay. Bring it on!

TKP Juniors vs Marymount Convent 21-15

The Juniors faced their toughest test against Marymount Convent, the South Zone Runner-up. The Juniors did improve, showing more grit and aggression against their opponents who managed to pip CHIJ Kellock to achieve 2nd in the South Zone. Though the Juniors were 3rd in the East Zone, this result showed that netball in the East Zone has improved tremendously and I dare say it is the strongest zone for primary school netball. With this victory, the Juniors have qualified for the Quarter-Finals.

However, the victory was a close one and the Juniors do need to improve on cutting down unnecessary mistakes. Furthermore, they were not helped by the absence of their first choice GD who had to take a piano exam! Goodness, can't she booked her exam date in the afternoon or something? Anyway, I hope the Juniors will round off their round 1 matches with a good performance on Monday and a convincing win. All the best! Jiayou Juniors, we know you can do it!

The Seniors also did not get off to a good start as well. Two of their key players, Jeraldine (GK) and Jamie (GD) were not available due to school work and Pepe, our all-rounder, had to take her GAT at RGS. So, with 9 players, the seniors began their quest for the Nationals!

The Seniors had to play the match with a make-shift defence, starting with Chia Yu as GK (her first time playing a netball match) and Josephine (her mobility is suspect) . Furthermore, our attacking players were not having their best game either, often running out of ideas in the final third. Being the first match after the long holidays, the rustiness in their shooting showed as they could not convert many of the chances that fell their way. Credit must also given to the opponents who were aggressive and fought hard.

In the end, the quality showed as the Seniors used their aerial and physical superiority and their experience gained from training overseas as well as with the National players to win the match! However, if the girls are to overcome tougher opponents such as CHIJ Kellock who thrashed their opponents 54-9, St Margaret's and St Hilda's, they must first improve their attacking play especially our GS who really needs to work on her different movements to get the ball within shooting range.

All in all...a win is a win...This victory will give the Seniors a lift and hopefully do much better to win their next match this Friday and qualify for the Q-Finals.

Juniors Rd 1

TKP Juniors vs Henry Park Pri 19-8

Both teams started tentatively and it was a while before the first team scored - Henry Park. TKP Juniors made their coach, Mr Njoo raging with anger as they kept on making those niggling mistakes - ball dropping, bad passes, bad decision making. Definitely not the team I remembered during the holidays when they could even defeat Fengshan Pri. All of them were not in the game and I was able to tell the lack of practices they had. Well, obviously the LOA that the 4 girls served really did take a toll on them as they fumbled the ball easily.

1st Quarter 4-2 (just mange to beat them)
2nd Quarter 4-3 (players are making huge number of mistakes most notably Debby, our GS)
3rd Quarter 7-1 (finally managed to get into the game playing the way we were supposed to)
4th Quarter 4-2 (Again, not the best of quarter, but the girls managed to scrap a victory)

Overall, the Juniors will not go far if they continue to display this sort of performance especially during crucial games where key players cracked due to pressure. The Juniors must have the mental toughness and tenacity to overcome their fear. Mr Njoo was telling me how he saw one of the juniors in the morning and she looked so pale and scared. A word of wisdom to the Juniors...PLease overcome your fear..to be honest, we are TKP...usually it is the other way round, our opponents will be nervous to play against us. So...juniors...do us proud and play the way TKP used to play netball - Stylish, Speedy and Sensational!

News Update!

Can you believe it! Our Junior team has just risen from the dead. Four players - Depi (Centre and Captain), Dewi (Wing Attack), Ariqah (Goal Attack) and Debby (Goal Shooter) are on Leave of Absence LOA, after having gone to one of the affected countries (H1N1) during the June Holidays. As the games are scheduled on the first week of school, we will not be able to field a strong team with more than half the team not available. We were about to pull out of the competition because honestly, how to play with 4 main players out of the team? Luckily, the Nationals will be delayed by about one week, giving the four players the opportunity to get back to action after serving their LOA.

8th -10th June

June Holidays! Yipee! Time to slack and grow fat? You wish...The netballers were put through a series of specialised netball clinics by renowned coaches, National Open and age-group players, a physiotherapist, two A-badge umpires and most importantly, top opponents for the final day carnival.

The result:
The netballers emerged from the training camp...better, stronger, fitter, confident and more skilful.

Don't wish to elaborate on the specifics but it was indeed heartening to see the end result after a gruelling 3-day camp. The players were now better tactically as well as mentally stronger to cope with the demands of the Nationals in term 3. All I have to say to to the other teams in the nationals...BRING IT ON!!!

What a day! The juniors bounced back from their semi-final defeat and won their 3rd place playoffs. Having played with Pasir Ris Pri during the quarter finals and narrowly beaten them, the juniors knew they have a tough match ahead. True enough, it was a titanic battle right up to the 4th quarter when the superior midfield as well as the mighty defence coupled with some accurate shooting won the day for the juniors! The match was an appetizer of what was to come for the seniors in the final.

Having beaten St Hilda's Pri last year in the final, their opponents were in no mood to make it a repeat of last year and fought point for point right up to the end of 3rd quarter with the score still deadlocked at 15-15. The edge for the seniors were the fighting spirit and the experience of having won the nationals last year. Finally, the seniors in the last 5 minute managed to capitalise on their opponent's mistakes and won the match 21-17. Phew! It was a close shave.

When quizzed on his thoughts after the pulsating match, Mr Njoo calmly replied that the other schools in the east zone were fast catching up and the immediate response was to work harder and to raise the standards of netball in TKP even higher. He also mentioned that the talent identification of players in future has to be more rigourous so as to mount a better challenge to wrest the junior title back from Fengshan Pri and to train the current batch of juniors to match up to the other teams whom we have lost. This is a transitional period for TKP netball and we certainly hope that we will be able to regain what we have lost as soon as possible! Come on TK!

Is this the end of of TKP's netball golden era? Can we take another heart-stopping match after encountering one lucky escape against Pasir Ris Pri on Tuesday. To quote Mr Njoo, "This is the first time in a long while that I was feeling uncomfortable in an East Zone netball match, we used to be so strong that I will only get this feeling in the finals!" How times has changed. More and more schools are getting stronger every year and this time the TKP juniors will have to play their toughest opponents in the east, St Hilda's pri.

It was actually a match filled with errors. It looked like the team that made the least mistakes will truimph. The first quarter ended with our juniors trailing by 3 points, 8-5. The 2nd and 3rd quarters were nerve-wrecking with the juniors missing their chance to capitalise on their opponents' mistakes and ended trailing by 3 points. The juniors were making simple basic errors that got the TKP supporters fuming mad. One of the teachers remarked that the girls were not mentally strong and was crumbling under pressure. It was really frustrating to watch them underperformed for the second match in a row. St Hilda's Pri were fast tiring and were playing even more badly than our girls but it was a little too late to catch them even though if you count the chances we had, it was definately more than St Hilda's.

Alas, the final whistle went and the bright golden era of TKP netball ended. No more double champions in 2009. Let's hope the juniors can bounce back from this setback. As we left Kallang Netball Centre, I could not help but to steal a glance at our coach, Mr Njoo. His shoulders were slumped and he was walking slowly back to the bus. For the first time, I could see the vulnerable side of him where once it was filled with fire and passion!

The Seniors booked their semi-final passage with thumping wins against their quarter-final opponents. The seniors showed their aerial superiority, better physical strength and skills and the more notable factor - their depth in the reserves. Mr Njoo played all 12 players in both their games and still the intensity of the effort was still evident. They will play against Fengshan Pri in their last quarter final game on Tuesday before the semi-final match on Thursday. Good luck seniors!

Yipee! The Juniors are through to the Semi-finals with one more Q-final match yet to be played. A decider to be No. 1 int he group! On Monday, the Juniors will pip their wits against Pasir Ris Pri, a team that they lost last year during the Kidznet Carnival. That defeat denied the Juniors a chance to play in an exhibition match against St Margaret's Pri at the 5 Nations Cup Final. The Juniors have been waiting for this opportunity all year and this will be the best chance for them to show everyone that they have improved. However, to win Pasir Ris Pri, the juniors will have to up their game - be more aggressive, play well defensively and make less mistakes in their attacking game. A lot will depend on how the GK - Natasha and GD - Tiffany coped with the pressure imposed by the Pasir Ris attackers. In the meantime, Mr Njoo is devising a game plan to outwit their opponents so as to become the group champion!

In fact, he claimed the juniors were more accurate in their games based on the statistics being painstakingly compiled by the reserves during matches. It was a good draw. First of all, it gives the juniors a chance to exact 'revenge' on Pasir Ris Pri after losing to them 2-1 last year during the Kidznet Carnival. Secondly, no disrespect to the other teams in the group, they are probably not as strong as the ones in group Y. Group Y seems like a group of 'death'. All 4 teams stand a chance to qualify for the semi-finals although Fengshan and St Hilda's are favourites to go through. However, White Sands and Yumin can give them a fight if they have their off-days (very common for junior matches). I'm salivating just at the thought of watching these pulsating, heart-wrenching games next week! Bring it on!!!

The Juniors completed their final match in the first round defeating Opera Estate Pri 56-0. Again, the players were being shuffled around as Mr Njoo wanted to give all the players in the team more match exposure. One of the players that have caught everyone's attention was the team's GA, Ariqah. Although not the tallest player around, she has inspired the juniors with her crisp shooting, swift running and her ever present enthusiasm for the game! She is definately the player to watch in this team. More importantly, she plays with a smile on her face all the time. Of course I must also add that the juniors is not a one-man team - there are talented players all over the court. Natasha, Tiffany and Nadia are forming a great defensive partnership, Depi and Dewi are great attacking midfielders and of course our dangerous marksmen, shooters - Ariqah and Debby. The juniors are shaping well after a tentative start and we look forward to more action from them in the Q-finals. Go Juniors!

The seniors faced their first setback when Jeraldine, our first-choice defender, sprained her ankle and was ruled out for one week. Mr Njoo, though perturbed, told the team that he has confidence in the team's depth in strength and actually felt it was a good time to let more players have more game time. He has always wanted Josephine and Pepe to step up their game and try to win their places in the first seven. During the game against Park View, their nervousness showed when they conceded 'soft' goals to their opponents. However, both of them soon 'warmed up' and played well, making crucial interceptions and rebounds. Mr Njoo believes that the strength in the 'reserves' is a testimony of how strong the team is and he certainly believes that this is one of his strongest team to date - with very good players in the reserves able to step up to play and more importantly, ability to win games! We hope to see more new faces making headlines during the Q-finals! GO Seniors!

East Zone Netball 2009 First Rd Update

SENIORS

The 'new' seniors had a great start to the year winning the ISSAC League in term one. In addition to that, they have already beaten their closest rivals CHIJ Kellock (National Runner-up), St Margaret's Pri (National 3rd) and St Hilda's Pri (National 4th) on their way to winning the ISSAC league competition. The good start of the year was probably helped by their recent Perth training trip during the year-end holidays.

There were 16 players vying for the coveted 12 players spot for the East Zone Championship. According to our coach, Mr Njoo, he claimed that he had 'sleepless' nights deciding on the final 12 players. Still, he did comfort the others who did not make the squad that he would consider them for the nationals. Although the team lost Isabel Holt, our reserve shooter (left for international school), the team did have strength in depth with Syazana deputising as a reserve shooter.

The Juniors still have one more match against Opera Estate Pri next Tue but they have already qualified for the quarter-finals. Many have commented that the players that made up the junior team this year were lacking in height. The juniors did not let the comments bother them and prefer to let the results do the 'talking' for them, posting huge victories against their rivals.

We had the opportunity to interview their coach, Mr Edwin Njoo, with regards to the team' s chances on winning the east zone championship this year. He mentioned that this year's junior competition is very competitive with very good teams. They are St Hilda's, Fengshan Pri and Pasir Ris Pri. However, he did commented that TKP stand a very good chance too due to the fact that the players have a 'winning' mentality drilled into them from their illustrous seniors who have graced the junior competition and won it since 2005. 'Experience in winning championships is very important during tight games' was his explanation.

Final Coaching Clinic by Coach Tracey @ Salvado Rd, Wembley

The final training session was a teary affair. The girls made a nice card for Coach Tracey and presented the card together with our school magazine to her at the beginning of the session. It was a fruitful final session and TKP A played TKP B in a match and were given pointers during the training match. It was soon time to bid farewell and I was quite surprised to see Seak Im giving coach Tracey a hug. If you know Seak Im, she isn't the PDA sort of girl (Public Display of Affection). Jeraldine, one of coach Tracey's favourite player, gave her a hug as well. Coach Tracey certainly has made a great impact on the netballers' stay here in Perth and I sincerely hope the girls would repay her by winning the nationals next year!

Even media crew like me got to enjoy the nice home-made sandwiches and cakes! Yummy!

Classroom experience! Really enjoyed the time in the classroom. We get to learn a song and dance, get involved in a group discussion and also were given a tour of the school by our buddies! Noticed the school likes to use SMARTBOARDS for their lessons. Very interactive and fun!

Coaching Clinic @ Salvado Rd, Wembley

This was our second coaching clinic at Wembley, third one overall in the trip. Coach tracey was laying out all the cones and markers for her first drill when we arrived. The netballers slept early last night to prepare for a full day of training, fun and then match play (really a 'rojak' mix of emotions...serious, then fun and then back to serious mode). Well, after the clinic, we will be heading for the theme park, Adventure World.

As usual, the netballers were asked to jog round the entire width of the 30+ netball courts as warm-up. Pepe and Isabel sprinted back first nearing the end (they are the fitter ones I guess). Next, Coach tracey started a sort of a circuit training (3 stations) which is kind of what Mr Njoo always did for his physical part of the training. The first station was a sprinting + footwork station. The netballers had to learn how to take off quickly, overcoming a series of wooden planks placed on the ground from small steps to bigger steps which is kind of like an airplane taking off. Then, they have to negotiate the cones in front by jumping with both legs together. Coach Tracey explained that this drill helps the girls to accelerate more quckly, a much needed skill in netball matches where change of direction and speed is key to winning games particularly if we have no 'height'. Station two was a ball-handling practice and the third station was a skipping station. After that, the netballers were taught weaving in and out. Mr Njoo was particularly interested in this drill as it offers him another tactical option of attacking. Then, the girls were put into two groups and were playing this game 'Traffic jam' which focuses on timing and leading to receive the ball. Good drill! The netballers had fun as the losing team had to do suicides. Next, the girls got to play against each other. Team A vs Team B, although it was a foregone conclusion as to which team wins, Coach Tracey added that Team A have to win by 10 points to win the game. Did team A do it?

Immersion Activity - Adventure World

Adventure World , here we come! We really could not wait to hop off the bus once we noticed the huge sign 'Adventure World' ahead. We rushed out of the bus, almost knocking down the Aunt Josephine, our toue leader, off her feet. Our first ride as a 'team' was the Viking. Compared to the one in Sunway which turned 360 degrees, this one wa a piece of cake. Yet, not all the netballers took the ride...Next, Mr Njoo brought us to the next one, POWERSURGE. Af first, I thought nothingof it as it was so close to the ground. Little did I know that this ride would scare me out of my wits. It went up and down, left and right, and 360 degrees forward and backward. I honestly felt like puking after that. ?If you thought that we had experienced the scariest ride, the next one was even worse. It was the RAMPAGE! The worst ride ever possibly imagined. Again, like the the previous one, it goes into various movements, but much worse as it goes alot faster! I could see the horror of those who took it even Mr Njoo's facial expression was contorted into a look of fear and exhilaration. To cool us down, we next took a slow ride up to the highest point of the theme park for the roller coaster. It was a slow and scenic ride up, allowing us to cathc our breaths and enjoy the wonderful view of the the theme park has to offer. The roller coaster was a mild frightening at some parts. Just nice for my already shaken body! Our last ride as a team was a water slide called the Tunnel of Terror. We had to sit in pairs on a float and slide down the pitch-black tunnel. We were screaming in the dark until we reached the last part where there was an opening and SPLASH! We fell out of the float into the freezing cold water! We had lunch after that and Mr Njoo gave us permission to go have fun on our own while he looked after our stuff with Ms Ng. We ventured into other rides especially the wet ones. It was definitely the best day ever!

Matchplay @ Wanneroo District Netball Club

Back to serious mode, it was time to play some matches with the netballers from the Wanneroo District Netball Club. The club was having selection trials for the past week and there were about 100 over aspiring girls from the various age-group wanting to be part of this club. We were fortunate to take part in their trials for the Under 12 age group. First, the girls were to have a one hour developmental training before TKP A and B challenged the rest of the girls in two matches.

Finally, the mathces began, it was seven in the evening but it still looked pretty bright although it was getting colder for me by the minute. I was practically freezing while taking the video for the matches. The Wanneroo Distrct netballers were slightly much better than the Joondalup district netballers we played yesterday. Again, Team A did the school and country proud, defeating both the opposition with good scores. Team B played gallantly but with many newcomers in the team, they were not expected to beat the opposition. Some of the players thathave caught Mr Njoo's eye other than those in Team A are Pepe, Isabel and Josephine. Hope the three of them can give the team A a good fight for the first 7 places next year!

Morning Training

To start the day of netball matches, Mr. Njoo brought us out to the park near our hotel for an early morning jog. We walked past many brick houses. They were gigantic compared to the shoebox we lived in Singapore. Upon reaching the park, I stared at the wide green field around us. “Wow!” was all I could say. The view was fantastic! We are going to jog along the Swan River which overlooked the CBD in Perth City. We placed our tumblers at a bench and the netballers set off leaving me behind to look after their tumblers and towels. After a few minutes, they were out of my sight. They were supposed to jog for 15 minutes from where we were, do some core muscle exercises and then jog back. My job was to stay at the bench and ‘guard’ our stuff. I waited for 30 plus minutes before the netballers started appearing on the tracks again. Their cheeks were flushed and you could hear them panting from afar. I was so glad I did not take part in the exercise even though Mr Njoo invited me to.

Next, we were off to Joondalup for our first netball match of this trip. The netballers looked focused and were not as chatty as before. They wanted to start off with a victory and like what Mr Njoo has mentioned to them the night before at the debrief. We were not just playing for the school but for the reputation of our country! We had 14 players so Mr Njoo split us into Team A and Team B.

After a short coaching clinic focusing on agility and more core muscles training by coach Carrie, the matchplay began. TKP A vs Saints and TKP B vs Balmoral. TKP A started the match badly. As usual, they failed to score in their first centre pass. I could see the disgust on Mr Njoo's face when Seak Im threw the stray pass. Jeraldine was at the top of her game and gamely intercepted the Saints attack. Soon, TKP A began to rain attack after attack on Saints. Their tactics of defending very tightly at the opponent's goal paid off. TKP A began to lead by 9 goals after the game. TKP B played gallantly against the stronger Balmoral team (Yellow jersey). Though they gave their best, they were not able to defeat the more superior and faster Balmoral team and lost the match.

For the second game, Team A was going to play the tougher team, Balmoral. Again, they had a rocky start, due to losing the centre pass again. This time, it was not as easy to get back as Balmoral were just as good as them. It was like playing against St. Margaret’s. The GA (a malaysian) was very swift and accurate often giving Jamie a torrid time trying to guard her and the GS was very accurate. But their defense was not as good as their attack and it was easy for Seak Im and Corrins to take advantage of that having played together for quite some time now. Their understanding was somehow telepathic, each of them knew where the other would be and it was easy for the midfielders to find them in the 'D'. TKP A won the match but the difference was only about 5 goals. Team B got to play with the easier team, Saints. They started quite well, managing to get their centre pass all the way to the shooting ‘D’, but our inexperienced GS missed. For the first quarter of the match, Team B didn’t catch their rhythm so Balmoral overtook them by leaps and bounds. But after Pepe, the captain for Team B, pointed out their mistakes, they improved a lot in the end, only losing by a few points.
So, final review. Team A did their thing and won all two games while Team B lost all two games but tried their best.

Immersion Activity - Hillary Beach

‘Everyone change into your wet clothes because we are going to the Beach!’ that was what everyone was thinking as we arrived at the beach. That was what kept us going for the whole day. Unfortunately, it was drizzling so I held a sandcastle competition under the tent. The winner would get an ice cream for free! After hearing that, everyone immediately got to work. Unfortunately, they were distracted by two trays of fries bought by Mr Njoo. Only Xing Hui and Josephine didn’t stop building so I crowned them the winner. Then suddenly I was carried to the water and they threw me into it! I felt like I was turning to ice! The water was freezing cold. To make matters worse the wind was so chilly. I had to stay in the water to stay warm. I threw sand balls to those who threw me into the water. I finally got my revenge. Tee Hee! Once the hot sun came out, all of us emerged from the water and played Frisbee. My team kept losing because the wind was blowing the opposite direction . Grrr… Still, it was just a game. When we almost had to go, we had a big sand war to end the day off.

Bang! Bang! Bang! What was that deafening sound? I opened my sleepy eyes and realised we were late for breakfast and Mr Njoo was banging angrily outside trying to wake us sleepyheads! It was such a good sleep, the fresh crisp air and the warm sheets that I was in made me very reluctant to leave them and open the door for our teacher. As it was daylight savings in Australia now, the time in Perth was one hour ahead and we forgot about that and set our alarm wrongly. Anyway, this aside, we were definitely excited about the programmes awaiting us today.

Before breakfast, we fed the kangaroos Mango and Bella and the sheep with milk. They were sucking their milk bottle greedily, like a new-born baby sucking their mother’s milk. Everyone was shouting,’So cute!’ to all the animals. For breakfast, we had normal cereal, milk, sausages, scrambles eggs (yummy) and hash browns, buttered bread with jam (all home-made). Then it was time for the tractor ride! Anxiously, we jumped onto the tractor and set off to the vast ‘grassland’. When we came to a stop, a group of sheeps surrounded us. We took a handful of food and put it in front of the sheep. Many of them would fight to get it first. It would munch greedily and ‘smear’ their saliva all over our hands. Eww… It was just so icky! But in the end, all we could do is laugh. Our second tractor ride was at the orchard. We passed by peach trees, nectarine trees, mandarin trees, orange trees and grape vines! We stopped at every different fruit tree to listen to the owner of the farm, Bruce, explain about it. We were also allowed to buy the different fruits mentioned too. Like typical Singaporeans who love a good bargain, we immediately formed long snake-like queue to purchase the freshest fruits you can find!

The next programme that would make anybody jumped up and down with excitement --- Horse Riding!!! Even though each of us only rode the horse for a small round, it was FUN! Later, as we were feeding the horses with fruits and vegetables, we also got to know more about them. It was a valuable experience. Right as we stepped into the dining area of the farm, the smell of meat rushed to us, Our BBQ lunch! It included, tender lamb meat (no smell at all), tasty chicken wings and sausages. Delicious! Then came the sad part, we had to leave. We bade the animals and the owners of the farm farewell before driving off to Perth City. However, I know that there will always be a place in my heart for them.

Perth Trip Day One

First Coaching Clinic with Coach Tracey @ Salvado Rd, Wembley

Day one in Perth, Australia. As 14 netballers, 2 teachers, 1 tour guide and I walked out of the airport, the hot sun and cool air rushed out to greet us. Despite the fact that we did not sleep much on the plane (it was a midnight flight), our faces were radiant upon arriving for the 1st coaching clinic by Coach Tracey. Coach Tracey got us pumping by making us jog the entire area (30 over netball courts) as a warm-up. Next, the girls were taught new drills to improve their footwork, agility and ball-handling. Mr Njoo, our netball teacher, was busy trying to take down all the new drills. I'm pretty sure we'll be doing these drills when training starts next year! It was a whole new experience training in Perth. The weather was fantastic...though the Sun was blazing hot, we could not feel it as the air-con like chilly wind kept us cool and we did not even perspire during the whole session!

Immersion Activities - Desert Storm 4WD and Sandboarding @ Lancelin

Next Stop, Lancelin! It was a long journey there. When we reached there, the humongous gigantic Desert Storm 4WD bus caught our attention. The tyres were as big as a human being! We stared in awe...Soon, we were all huddled inside and the ride started. Up and down, up and down we went up the sand dunes, some very steep! The driver purposely stopped at the top of the sand dune and as we tipped slowly down, our hearts stopped like as if we were in a roller coaster...Wheeee....we swooped down the sand dunes at breakneck speed and it felt like we were going to topple but it didn't...the ride then carried on for a couple of times. Not long, we stopped and got out for picture taking. The sight was a joy to behold. We felt like we were in another planet...nothing around us but just the sand and the clear blue sky. It was perfect! Soon, we were taught how to sandboard. The driver brought us to the top of a steep sand dune about 20 to 30m high. Gosh! we are going to slide down with it...It was another heartstopping moment for me as I was the first to slide down. Wheeeeeeeeeeeee...the ride was phenomenal, no words could describe how I feel as I slid down the sand dune. Soon, we were all trying to slide in a variety of ways - sitting down, superman style and even backwards. What other activities could beat this?

Immersion Activities - Farmstay @ Windmill Farm, Bindoon

After a 'high', we proceeded to the Windmill farm at Bindoon to stay for the night. It was beautiful. The only thing we saw were green trees, farm animals and grassland. No tall skyscrapers, traffic jams and people. It was definitely a whole new experience for us. Immediately, when we got off, we were introduced to our hosts and were led to feed the kangaroos, sheeps, cows, chickens and a pony. The rooms we were to stay for the night seemed warm and nice (two huge houses with 3 bedrooms and attached toilets), just like those farmstay you read about in Enid Blyton's storybooks. The food was home-cooked, curry chicken, fried minced duck and mushroom soup (much better than campbells). Soon, we were given a sheep-shearing performance and learnt about spinning wool thread. What a first day! Before I could think of what the next day's programme was, I fell asleep...images of the sheeps and kangaroos in my dreams.

TKP vs CHIJ Kellock

What a day! An exhausting event has happened today. Supporters, have you lost your voice? Players, are your arms and legs sore? The netballers were excited. In the bus, they were moving around (when the bus stopped) painting the word TK in each other’s faces and hands. None of them looked very nervous or anxious, but who knows how they will react on court? TKP Juniors is by far the best team in TKP, but also the most unpredictable. They have beaten CHIJ Kellock before, so why can’t they do it again? WE MUST WE CAN WE WILL- these are the words which were repeating in the netballer’s minds. The seniors played well but will the juniors play a good game too?

Before the game started they did their quick warm-ups and started the first quarter. Mr Njoo also told the girls to finish the job. First to score-TK! Unfortunately, we still made a few errors. Jamie (GD) had to look before she passed, Rukmini,(C) did not make the right decision in her center pass and was asked to get the ball back when our opponent’s took the ball. GD made good interceptions but we lost the lead. Seak Im missed a attempt but caught the rebound and successfully the ball went in in the next attempt. When the first quarter ended, Mr Njoo was furious with the score. 5-9! The reason was because the aggression was not there and Jeraldine (GK) had to stick to the GS as if they were glued together.

Time for the second quarter… No! CHIJ shot in before TK could. And when our players managed to get the ball to the goal post, Corrine (GS) was not going out of the semi-circle when she was supposed to so her teammates could pass it to her. It seemed like Kellock was stronger than ever. Surprisingly, Kellock’s coach was not as fierce as before at the Kallang Netball Center! With the clock ticking down every second, TK finally managed a shot. WHOOSH! Nothing but net.. During this quarter, we missed a few chances to score ‘’Make it count girls, make it count!’’ the reserves, seniors and Mr Njoo would often shout when we were attempting to shoot. Also, our opponent’s GA was not being guarded by anyone so we let in a shot by them. We got the rhythm quick, but lost it. Our defence was slacking a little though luckily for us, one of Kellock’s player threw a lob which no one caught and went out. Yes! Our ball! Though it was not much use because when we got the opportunity to shoot, Corrine (GS)’s head was not in the game. At one stage of the quarter, we were 6-15, down by 9 points!

Third Quarter- After a good reprimanding, the netballers played with lots of determination. Xing Hui was standing right outside the semi-circle and when the ball bounced pass her, she did not catch it! TK Seniors were franticly shouting at their voice, yelling out good advices but did it really make a difference? Maybe. Soon enough, we started to play a bit better. GK made a good tip on the ball. A good catch was from our GA, Seak Im too. ‘’Good play, girls!’’ Mr Njoo shouted. We made it a good fight against Kellock during this quarter. It was like watching a horror movie, you were scared, but you had to watch it even so. Juniors were not complacent and had played their game, which paid off- 22-22! We caught up with them! It seemed impossible to claw back from a 9 point deficit. But they did it! The last quarter would tell them whether or not they were going to be the national champs. Let’s just hope they played with their will.

BEEP! The final and last quarter had started! I must say, the Juniors really played with their will and heart. It seemed like the longest quarter ever, but the best! The supporters were cheering loudly. Jamie(GD) made a good interception at the start, Corrine’s accuracy for shooting was good- from a far distance! We were first to score. A very risky position, only leading by 1 point, but they did not give up. Come on TK! Our defence was much better than the 1st, 2nd and 3rd quarter. Rukmini(C) was playing how she was supposed to be playing and when we were shooting, we caught the rebound when the ball went off the rim and shot in the next attempt. The ball went to the next team because our GA contact but our opponent did not get a chance to try an attempt because of our best GK! We got the rhythm and did not lose it. We slowed down the game a little and everyone gave their 110%. There was 1minute left and we were up by 5. And for the first time, Kellock’s GS missed an attempt! Score 30-25! The quarter was over and we won! We are the National CHAMPIONS! Everyone was hugging each other and our GA was near to tears. Even I was laughing! For the first time in TKP history, our juniors had won the nationals. Job well done, job accomplished! None of us could have won this game if there was not team spirit. TK Juniors certainly had that- WE MUST WE CAN WE WILL and WE WON!

This is the last game TKP Seniors are ever going to play. Though heartbroken by the Semi-Finals Match (and the Umpire), they will definitely not let them ruin their very last game in TKP.

So, forgetting the past; ignoring the future; caring about the present, the Seniors only thought of the match. However, it was not a good way to end their Netball Journey in Tanjong Katong Primary. They had to play against CHIJ OLN which they drew in the earlier rounds. Still, they wiped out that fear and made sure that history won't repeat itself.

The National 3rd and 4th Placings Playoff (Seniors)is starting. The GS of TKP is Dayanara, the GA is Liz, the WA is Vikki, the C is Olivia, the WD is Janelle, the GD is Sarah and the GK is Ting Fang. The reserves are Jing Jing, Tian Yu, Kah Mun, Yi Ying and Marin." And 'PHEET!!!' the match started. Uh-oh! CHIJ OLN had the ball first. If they scored first, they would gain confidence and keep on leading all the way. No, after losing to them once, the TKP Seniors were not going to let OLN off again. It was time to get back. It was time to kill OLN.

Last year, TKP Seniors lost to them. During the previous match with them, TKP Seniors thought that that was the time to beat OLN. However, fate did not think so and unfortunately they lost. That match cost them a rough and rocky path in the quarter-finals, having to face the giants -- St. Margaret's, Evergreen Primary. Still, they made it through the rough and rocky path, finally getting to the semi-finals which seemed impoosible after the defeat of the match against OLN. The National Finals was right at their doorstep. All they had to do was to win against ChIJ Kellock. By the 2nd or 3rd quarter of that match, they could already smell victory but somehow fate was not on their side again.

Well, that was the past and this was the present. Anyway, just by looking at TKP Seniors could make a six feet tall person feel like the tiniest person in the whole world. Not because they were angry but because they had that aggressive looks on their faces. OLN could sense that the TKP Seniors were going to give the fight of their lives. Back to the game, OLN had the ball and got it to OLN's 'D' successfully, the whole crowd went silent. One of the sharpest shooters of OLN missed the shot! The GD or GK caught the rebound easily and within a second, Liz was ready to shoot. She put her hands up, with the ball in her hands; her eyes looking attentively at the net and 'whoosh!' down went the ball through the net.

All the TKP supporters screamed and cheered with joy. The TKP Seniors got their rhythm even before the match started! When it was TKP's centre pass, they really made sure the ball would always be TKP's possession. OLN woke up and knew the team they were playing against now was not the same team that lost to them. However, a tragedy happened during the first quarter. Sarah, the most aggressive GD, hurt her ankle which was already injured. The pain was excruciating as she was clutching onto her ankle with all her might and moaning. Oh no! TKP Seniors had lost a good player! However, Mr Njoo found the right replacement -- Kah Mun. She may not be as aggressive but she was alert and fit into the game perfectly.

But, by half-time, the score was 17-12 in favour of TKP. There was a 70% chance of winning. All they had to do is to keep on fighting till the end and they would be National 3rd. Sadly, they lost the 3rd quarter. TKP only scored 4 while OLN scored 9 goals! Still, that made the score 21-21. Things started to look a little bleak as the wall of defence had holes that OLN could pass through. Luckily, Sarah felt better and insisted on finishing the game well. OLN were gasping, 'Oh No! The GD is back!' Despite the pain in her ankle, she gritted her teeth as she jumped, intercepted, ran around the court. The attack was great! When TKP was at their attacking 'D', the GK and GD would 'sandwich' Liz (because she was the one who always scored), leavibg Dayanara free. So, when Olivia or Vikki wnted to pass into the 'D', Dayanara could catch it without being afraid that the OLN's defenders would intercept. And finally 'PHEET!' the whole match ended!

VICTORY was ours this time!The Seniors were hugging everyone they saw and tears of joy were welling up in their eyes. What a happy ending to the TKP Seniors! They not only won the match, but they also did their very BEST! In my eyes, they were my national Champions!

GK from CHIJ OLN

We felt her height and her size would cause problems to many shooters. Despite her large frame, she has the agility of a dancer and is able to get many rebounds. Other notable GK worth mentioning include (St Margs GK and TKP GK Ting Fang)

Rachella GD from St Margs

Definitely one of the best performers in the nationals. She never fails to deliver and her good reading of the game gives her many interceptions. Her speed, her leaping ability as well as her never-say-die attitude are one of the many reasons why there is no contest in this position. Other notable GD include (Sharmaine CHIJ OLN and CHIJ Kellock GD)

Olivia C for TKP

WD or C for All-Star Team

A prominent centre for TKP seniors, Olivia passes well and is an all-rounder. Able to defend as well as attack, she can play in any positions in mid-court. Be it WD, C or WA, she will fit in seamlessly into this all-star team as a WD or C.

Esther C for St Margs

WA or C for All-Star Team

The fastest player on court. Though shorter than most of her counterparts, she is able to compensate her lack of height with her leaping ability. She can play in both Centre or Wing Attack. She has a knack for the tightest of openings to seek out a pass to the shooters.

Shannon WA for St Margs

Her understanding with Esther is the main reason why she should play the WA in this All-Star Team. A good passer and another speedster, she is able to get away quickly from her marker to receive passes and cause damage to oponents by supplying passes to the shooters. Other notable WA include (Kellock's WA)

Liz GA for TKP

She single-handedly win games for TKP. She is the main reason why TKP has progressed so far in this competition. A thorn to many GDs during the nationals even with her lack of height. Her speed and her quickness to get into space will give even the quickest of defender problems. She has great shooting range as well. Also, a great passer of the ball, acts as a second WA at times to ease the workload of the mid-court players. Definitely one of the best performers in her position so far! Other notable GAs include (Daisy of St Margs, GA from Evergreen Pri, GA from Yumin)

GS from CHIJ Kellock

Though not known for her mobility, the GS from Kellock has deadly shooting accuracy. It was her deadly accuracy in her shooting that killed TKP's hope in reaching the national finals. Her height and her sense of positioning are added bonus to her game. Other notable GS include (Andrea from St Margs, GS from CHIJ OLN)

That's it...this All-Star Team will definitely give the C div teams in sec schs a tough fight!

The Juniors are poised to become the first team in TKP history to win the National Championship. TKP netballers have come close in 2005, 2006 and 2007 - only to fall short in the finals and achieved second place. This could be the year TKP broke their duck and win their first ever National Championship! So calling all ex-TKP netballers, teachers, parents and friends of TKP, we need your support to become the first school in the east to win the nationals!!!

My hands were trembling as I wrote this match report. It was as if I was penning an orbituary. Tears trickled down as words became sentences and sentences became paragraphs. The whole tragedy of how the match went began to unfold before my very eyes.

As I interviewed Mr Njoo on how the match went, I was given an account on how this team reached its greatness. FLASH BACK...This team was coached by Ms Mary Lee, a reputable coach when they were in Pri 4. Already boasting great basics, they managed to defeat the mighty St Margs at the Cross Straits Tournament in KL when they were in P5 and won the Cup competition. A feat so far no other TKP team has managed. They won the East Zone comfortably but disaster struck when they were pitted against St Margs in the National Semi-finals. They lost! Worse still, during the 3rd/4th placing play-offs, they arrived late and did not do their warm-up and subsequently lost to CHIJ OLN during extra time. What happened to the 'greatness' that Mr Njoo had predicted for this team?

The whole senior team was disbanded and a whole new array of fresh faces started training with the regulars. It was BAD! The Seniors started the year losing to Evergreen Pri in a friendly. Lost to St Margs in the SSS carnival. Lost to St Margs in the Cross Straits Final as well. Though they won the East Zone competition, not many had high hopes for this team. They lacked height and only Liz was a seasoned shooter, the rest were actually new to their positions. But like all wonderful fairy tale, there was a remarkable turnaround. Just like the song in this blog 'When You Believe' , the girls never lost their belief and faith and they fought on!

The seniors had a tough route to the semi-final. They had to face St Margs, Evergreen and Yumin. They had lost to St Margs and Evergreen before but still they believed... Miracles do happen and they defeated St Margs
(argubly the best team in the nationals) in their first match and Evergreen was next in line...VICTORY...They defeated Evergreen and finished the job by defeating Yumin to top the group! What a turnaround! The seniors were getting the respect they finally deserved.

FLASHBACK to the present...against CHIJ Kellock (last year's National Champs), they faced an uphill task but they know they have the ability to do it and make it to the National Finals for the first time. Disaster struck! Sarah (GD) got injured during training and had to limped out of training. Until the last minute before the game started, Mr Njoo was still unsure if she should start...

Sarah mentioned she wanted to play through the pain barrier and assured Mr Njoo that she would give her best even if it meant aggravating her injury further. IT gave the whole team a boost and the seniors started the match in a spellbinding manner...up by 4 points without any reply from Kellock...It was destiny for the seniors!

The first quarter ended 8-7 in favour of TKP. Good start but not nearly good enough yet...The second quarter exploded in another topsy-turvy manner. KEllock found their rythm and their shooter (GS) was in devastating form never once missing a shot! On our part, the attacking quartet consisting of GS, GA, WA and C fought back scoring every time they had the possession.

At the end of the 2nd quarter, TKP seniors were up by 4 points. We were nearly there!

To their credit, Kellock never gave up and came back strongly in the third quarter. Perhaps the seniors were complacent, they did not perform as well as the first two quarters. Both Liz and Dayanara missed important shots. Still, they did just enough...Third quarter, TKP seniors were still up by 2 points.

What can I say about the 4th quarter? It seemed pretty hazy to me now...All I can say that it was an emotional and tragic end for the seniors. The seniors again were rocked early by the well-drilled machines of KEllock who caught up and were in the lead this time by 2 points. The seniors didn't give up. All seven of them with the supporters behind them encouraging every move, tried to intercept the rampaging Kellock players. Finally, We got the interception we needed and the magic quartet advanced forward into the shooting zone. PHEEET! The female umpire blew the whistle claiming Liz was hopping. Our hearts sanK! that was an important call...Did she get it right...many of us wondered. Nevermind, the seniors fought on...PhEEET! She blew the whistle again just as Dayanara was about to shoot...she was adjudged to have some footwork problem...My mouth was wide-opened..though I was not an expert in netball but it did seem pretty normal and the call was very close...I could see Mr Njoo's wide mouthed expression in shock...usually he would be in his element by now with his motormouth giving out instructions and encouragements...he collasped back in his seat...resigned to the fate that the match was not in anyone's hands but the UMPIRE! Phheeeeeeet! Olivia was called for stepping....PHEEEET! Vikki was called for something I could not even make out what it was...HOw can the seniors fight back when they are no playing with 7 players but were outnumbered fighting their battle with 8 players including the umpire...In the end, TKP seniors lost by 3 points - 23-26...

Tears erupted from the players immediately from the players and some of the supporters. MAny were still shell-shocked by what happened. I remembered what Mr Njoo always teach us and that is the most important thing in sports is not about winning but about giving our best so that at the end of the game, we could look into each other's eyes and not felt any guilt...we were a TEAM! We have suffered defeat before and walked away without guilt but this time was different...somehow I felt we were robbed...robbed of an equal chance for a fightback...robbed of a chance to be in the final...We were not sore losers...we just wanted a fair chance to compete...BUT...were we given that chance today? Somehow I left the match with sadness and many unanswered questions in my head...SIGH!

One thing I was pretty sure...The seniors are already CHAMPIONS in my heart! TKP Seniors is the best, is the best, is the best!

TKP Juniors vs. St.Hilda's. We were nervous, but Mr Njoo believed we could do it and told the juniors to wipe off all their nervousness and to be calm and confident. The juniors have beaten St. Hilda's before, CHIJ Kellock and St.Margaret's so technically, they should be the national champs! However, there are no such thing as a confirmed 'Win'. The Juniors were reminded time and time again not to be complacent but to 'get the job done'.

When the first quarter started, Corrine (GS) was first to score. Good Start for TKP. St Hilda's were no pushover and they played aggressively, fighting for every loose ball and it definitely disrupted our game plan. Kudos to their coach for getting the St Hilda's players all fired up. TKP juniors retaliated and soon the game was filled with nitty fouls and stoppages. It was frustrating for us to watch the game as the juniors abandoned their game plan and it was a messy affair. First quarter...7-3.

St.Hilda's made it a tight fight for us. Mr Njoo reprimanded the Juniors for playing fast;once they caught the ball, without glancing around for any free player, they just threw the ball. It was time for the second quarter, Jeraldine(GK) made good interceptions but threw bad passes... Seak Im(GA), the best player TK has developed but was not showing her ability on court with careless passing and poor shooting. Rukmini(C) was hit by St.Hilda's Center but was told to bear with the pain.If they wanted to win so badly, would they mind so much about their own pain? It was a waste when we had opportunity but let our opponent take it away. ''Play slow!'' Mr Njoo and the Seniors would encourage the junior team. They have been making many mistakes from playing too fast! The score ended with us leading by 5 points.

''BEEEEP'' the umpire whistled. The start of the third quarter had begun! Oh no... St.Hilda's scored before TK could! Our shooters did not do very well and missed many attempts. The seniors started to shout some advice and encouraged them. Mr Chua, our VP came to the match to support the Juniors too! Back to the point, our defence was a no problem but the PROBLEM was our attacking skills! We were slacking... What had happened? The score at the end of the third quarter was 13-10. St Hilda's had caught up! their spirited fight back angered Mr Njoo as he lambasted the juniors at the break. Tessa (GA) of St Hilda's had led a great fight back!

Before the fourth quarter started, the Seniors and Juniors did a quick huddle and went out to the court. We were first to score again but only after 2 attempts by Seak Im(GA), Corrine(GS) managed a shot from a far distance. Both teams were exhausted. Jamie(GD) was in a blur and when she gave a tip, the ball was passed back to her opponent. 'Wake up!' Mr Njoo shouted to Jamie who time and time again gave the ball away to the opponents much to the chagrin of the TKP supporters. After a while, Seak Im got her rhythm back. Unfortunately, a tragedy happened. TK Juniors 's captain was sent off for aggressive contact. To make matters worse, no replacement was allowed. After that, the girls did not play so well. Without their captain on court, the juniors were like lost sheeps not knowing what to do.

When the match ended, the juniors did not celebrate that they had made it to the National Final. They knew they did not play well and were disappointed with how they played. The score was 17-11! Mr Njoo gave them a quick debrief. He went through with them on why they are such a good team but could not play to their potential. Oh, and, Jeraldine our GK received a congratulatory letter from St.Margs! Now, all they had to do is to win CHIJ Kellock again on Wednesday. I believe they can and will win for us! Do us proud Juniors! We will be supporting you!! -Nothing But The Best.

The magnificent seniors had to accomplish their one final task - defeat Yumin to top their group and hopefully avoid the tougher team in the semi-finals. With two energy-sapping matches last week, Mr Njoo was not sure the girls had it in them to carve out another vctory. The last time we played Yumin was in the east zone semi-finals and the seniors only managed to win by two points...SCARY!

The match though was not as exciting as the previous two encounters. Yumin had nothing to play for after losing their last two matches. TKP seniors started well and soon they were able to lead in all the quarters resulting in a 39-20 total score. Most notable player was Dayanara, who had a blistering game with her high percentage shooting accuracy...and mind you...many of ther shots were from quite a distance away.

With that, the seniors waited intently for the results of the other group top of the table clash. Their opponents could either be CHIJ OLN or CHIJ Kellock. The match there was indeed a see-saw battle with both teams boasting very tall players. In the end, OLN won by a point condemning Kellock to a runner-up position...Shock! The TKP seniors will now have to play CHIJ KEllock, last year's National Champs while St Margs will play OLN. Even though TKP Seniors have topped the group, their semi-final opponents looked pretty difficult...I hoped the TKP Seniors will use their fighting spirit that they used against St Margs for this epic semi-final this Friday! I will be waiting with bated breath until Friday comes around...Till then, I will be having restless nights!

This match report is dedicated to Jeraldine, TKP Juniors best defender!

1630 hrs...Last Friday...juniors had a training to counter CHIJ Kellock's centre pass. The seniors were told to simulate how the kellock players would attack their centre pass. Four key players, Jeraldine (GK), Jamie (GD), Fatin (WD) and Rukmini (C) were taught how to defend the centre pass. Jeraldine would stand at the edge of the 'D' and would try to intercept the long lobs that would find the Kellock's WA and GA.

0740 hrs...Today...PE room...aircon at full-blast...The juniors were told to gather inside the room for a short briefing. Mr Njoo showed them a short video clip from the movie 'Facing the Giants'. In the short clip, images of how a small sized-football team was able to overcome the odds and truimph over another football team twice their size in terms of numbers and physique. The scene of a football player doing the 'death crawl' nearly moved them to tears. Here was a man down on all fours carrying a 160 pound team mate across the field. The juniors were motivated!

...0930 hrs...Kallang Netball Court 3...match vs CHIJ Kellock...It was a tough match, but the netballers were confident and calm, not nervous, not scared. In the first centre pass, Jeraldine intercepted the lobs by the opponent's centre. Bingo! That was what the TKP juniors had expected from the Kellock players. We were able to counter their devastating well-used centre passes. Then, Our accurate GS and GA, Corrine and Seak Im, shot in the goals almost every single chance they got; defenders and attackers were running around with sweat dripping down their foreheads. They made very few mistakes, picking themselves up when they fell. First Quarter 8-3...

Second Quarter, the netballers were getting the rhythm. I could hear the roar of the tigress coach from CHIJ Kellock across the court, but the juniors did not get distracted. They were so engrossed in the game, so serious in winning . ''Whoosh!''the ball went in the net. Time after time, we scored. Every time the opponent's GS missed a shot, either our GK or GD or both would fight for the rebound as if it was gold. Second Quarter 16-8...

They played with their hearts, not bothering about how tired they were chasing after all the loose balls. Their movements started to get sharper, quicker and better. They were very clear with their patterns and when they had to switch, they reacted fast. Third quarter was the best quarter. Jeraldine(GK)was tipping and catching the ball.She played beautifully! Fatin was giving her best, you could tell by her facial expression. Aggressive! Our defence was no problem, attack was good, we should be able to win this!Everyone has put 110% into the game. Great! When a lob was thrown, they leaped, trying to take the ball before their attacker could take it. They were all so confident. WE WILL WIN! Third Quarter 25-12...

Finally, the last quarter. Will Kellock catch up? The juniors were starting to slack a little, maybe because they thought they were going to win, so they thought there was no need to work as hard. Looking at their opponent's not being as active, Kellock players took their chances. They did not dare miss a goal and waste the opportunity. We ended up with the score 3-7 for the last quarter.But in the total? 28-19! We WON! The first team in TKP to ever beat CHIJ Kellock and St.Margaret's in the Nationals.

As I have probably said before, it was a tough fight, which is why it did not matter that much that we let Kellock score many points, since we scored more! Looking at the top 4 teams left in the nationals...St Margs, CHIJ Kellock, ST Hilda's and TKP, I could not help but think this could be the year the juniors won the coveted National Title. They have actually defeated all three teams in the competition. We could not have done it without team spirit, ONE TEAM ONE SOUL-JUNIORS ALL THE BEST!

TKP Seniors had put up a tough fight against St. Margaret last Tuesday and actually won! After the euphoria that has surrounded the last gasp victory, Mr Njoo was quite worried that the seniors would not be able to reproduce another herculean effort after such an energy-sapping victory. Evergreen Pri, the north zone champion, had defeated our seniors earlier this year in a friendly and has also won their first match in the quarter-final. Just like us, all they needed was another victory to qualify for the semis. Their GA and GS have terrific telepahic understanding and both could drop bombs after bombs to destroy us. The seniors were cautious, knowing one more victory would send them to the semi-finals and a place in the national top 4.

The fighting spirit was already present in TKP and Evergreen members in the 1st quarter, so I could sense that it was going to be a close match. It had the same tense atmosphere during the match just like the one with St. Margaret's. However, TKP Seniors started a bit more slowly than Evergreen, falling behind Evergreen by one. It was like whenever Evergreen scored one, then TKP would then score another.That made the score 5-6, TK was losing by one! During the break, Mr Njoo explained clearly to them since they have lost the first quarter, they must win the second one and go on stronger quarter by quarter.

Looking intentively at the ball, mind focussed on the game, not thinking about lunch, not thinking about computer games, not even thinking about themselves! All they could think was to win the quarter and bring glory to TKP! Surprisingly (for this kind of match), TKP got up from their fall and 'walk on' (just like the song by U2). The bond between Liz(GA), Vikki(WA), Olivia(C) was greater and stronger so the attack looked good. Dayanara(GS) was more involved in the game than the first quarter and was sharper in shooting, giving Liz more breathing space as the Evergreen defenders were giving her a hard time. Their strong get-back affected their score and they were up by five! Evergreen was losing but their coach remained positive and and leaped with joy every time her team scored. I feel that we should be like her, no matter how tough the going gets or if there is obstacles in front of us, we must always be positive, and tell yourself that you can do it!

The last quarter was the most thrilling one, and also the most important one to continue playing well. Evergreen finally played with more intensity at the beginning of the last quarter. With sweat pouring down from their faces, adrenalin pumping fast, TKP Seniors tightened their defence, passed accurately as they attacked, and sharpened ther shooting. It was an even encounter but the strong 2nd quarter finish by the seniors ensured that there was no turning back for the fightback by Evergreen Pri. I could tell that the seniors were dead beat but using every ounce of energy in their body, they completed the match maintaining a 4-point lead. They were going to the National Semi-Finals and has achieved the National Top 4! Well done seniors.

TKP Juniors passed, caught, jumped and scored, passed, caught, jumped and scored, and passed, caught, jumped and scored every time they had the ball to defeat Pasir Ris. It was a game for the Juniors to show their supremacy and they did it magnificently. Knowing that they have played badly in many matches during the 1st quarter, they wanted to start the game well so as to build up momentum for the rest of the national campaign.

Mr Njoo told them to play slowly at first to 'warm-up'. And it really worked! Starting slowly and steadily, it really ensured TKP Juniors a few more goals. Soon, the Juniors began to adapt to the rhythm of the game and played better, quicker and sharper. However, the defence was slacking a little as they let in three goals by Pasir Ris. The GS of Pasir Ris got the better of Jamie(GK)---There was always a lot of space between the goal post and both of them. So, everytime Pasir Ris wanted to pass the ball to the GS, the GS would go nearer to the goal post fast, leaving Jamie still at the front of Pasir Ris's 'D'. Then the GS would catch the ball lobbed over Jamie' head and shoot. Still, the Juniors definitely 'killed' Pasir Ris 15-3 (which was double the normal score of the first quarter) and there was no way Pasir Ris could catch up with TKP Juniors' quick but steady rhythm.

Next quarter, it was the defence that did well. The defenders must have looked like giants, making Pasir Ris 'shiver with fear'. With trembling hands(figuritively), Pasir Ris managed a goal. While leaving Pasir Ris to think of a good way to attack, the shooters kept on shooting like they have been doing it since they were babies. By the end of the third quarter, the score was 37-7! They were strong!

You would think, after three quarters of running around in the court, thinking on their wits end on who to pass the ball to, they would be half dead. On the contrary, they played as well as they started! Mr Njoo made a couple of changes in the final quarter, giving some players the opportunity to play even though goal difference might be a factor if they were to draw with Kellock in their third and final penultimate game next Tuesday. Giving both Pepe and Vanessa a rare start, replacing Corrine (GS) and Fatin (WD) and shifting our chili padi Xing Hui to the centre. within three or four passes, the ball would already be in the hands of the shooter and then it's all up to them. After the short ten minutes of the quarter, the umpire finally blew for time. TKP Juniors trashed Pasir Ris hollow with the highest score TKP has ever gotten in the Nationals so far, 47-8!

So, TKP Juniors has beaten Marymount Convent, mission 1 accomplished. TKP has beaten Pasir Ris, mission 2 accomplished. The final mission is to beat CHIJ (KELLOCK) next Tuesday. I really believe that the Juniors would put up a tough fight for them and WIN!

It was day one of the National Quarter-Finals for TKP Juniors. Confident of beating Marymount Convent, they 'marched' into Kallang netball court 3. They were serious in putting 110% of their effort into the game.

However the determination of really trashing Marymount was gone as the match started with a slothful beginning (probably due to the foggy, lazy morning). Sure, TKP Juniors were leading by three at first but there were many careless mistakes made by them which could have got them a few more goals. The score of the first quarter (7-4 which was much lesser than their usual score) shook the Juniors out of their haziness and to realise that that quarter was bad.

This time, the rythm which was gone at the beginning of the match came back and stayed there. They were fighting for the ball like they were fighting for their lives! They tried to catch every ball lobbed by their opponent. They leaped so high like they could reach the sky just to intercept the ball. No doubt, it was a great improvement from the first quarter. The match then was slowed down after the second quarter. But TKP Juniors tried not to be affected and kept on pitter-pattering to keep focussed even if the ball was not on their side. Putting in all their energy they had left, the Juniors made a great ending to the match.

Every time the shooters endeavoured a shot, a ray of light seemed to be beaming onto them and the ball would find a way into and through the hoop. When they had the possesion of the ball, the mid-fielders passed so swiftly around that Marymount did not even have a chance to intercept. Guarding Marymount's 'D' ferociously like dogs, it was almost impossible for Marymount to attack. The match ended nicely, with a score of 37-9. TKP Juniors were VICTORIOUS!

Game One. St Margaret's Primary. QUARTER-FINALS. What a way to start our first game! TKP Seniors trooped into Kallang Netball Centre without much fanfare preparing for the battle. Adrenalin pumping. Mind focused and ready for the biggest game of their lives. The day before, the seniors had a short training session where they were shown a short video clip of a movie 'Friday Night Lights'. The short clip showed how an underdog high school football team got over their initial nervous start in the State Championship final and played the game of their lives, giving nothing but their best. Though they lost the match at the last minute, they were able to look into their team mates' eyes without guilt as they have given their very all in the game - Perfection! That was exactly what Mr Njoo, TKP's coach wanted from the netballers in today's encounter. What happened today in the match for those who have witnessed it will definitely leave an indelible mark as it was one of the most topsy-turvy match ever played.

During the break, Mr Njoo gave them the fiercest hair-dryer treatment I have ever witnessed. His eyes bulging, veins from his forehead seemed like they were going to explode and his snarling expression coupled with his thundering roar certainly woke the seniors up. They played much better in the 2nd quarter but still trailed by 3 points after the break. Tired, body aching and crestfallen, the seniors gathered in front of Mr Njoo. Though they played much better, the seniors could not find a solution to outwit the well-drilled machines of St Margs.

The plan then in the 3rd quarter was to make sure Liz (GA) was given enough space in the 'D' to move in for the kill. To do that, Dayanara (GS) had to move quickly out of the shooting zone and to move back in to support Liz for the return if needed. It worked to a certain extent. The seniors managed to end the quarter trailing by two points. That means that they have actually won that third quarter encounter. It seemed to work! But is it too late? Two points with ten minutes to go against St Margs is not something you would want to take into the last quarter.

With the strong support from the juniors, Ms Noormala, Mdm Nancy Pey and Mr Chua (VP), the seniors huddled and looked each other in the eye just like in the movie clip and aimed for the most important thing that will take them through...PERFECTION! Mr Chua (VP) gave a stirring war cry urging the seniors to use what they have experienced at the recent expedition (Kayaking 74 km at Paka River) to win the last quarter.

TK!TK! Fight! Fight! Fight!

It seemed to work! St Margs were rattled by TKP seniors who came out of the 4th quarter looking like possessed demons. Ting Fang (GK) was everywhere. Her long, slender hands seemed elongated as they intercepted and tipped the ball away from the St Margs attackers. Sarah and Jannelle (WD) were playing like they had wings attached to their backs, flying for interceptions and causing the fast-tiring St Margs players into making mistakes. The attacking triangle of Olivia (C), Vikki (WA) and Liz (GA) meanwhile were magical as they swooped down the St Margs 'D' like Eagles catching their prey with their telepathic understanding and quick movements. Dayanara (GS) caused more confusion to the St Margs defence by running out of the 'D' giving Liz the space to move in for the kill and shoot. TKP plundered St Margs non-stop with quick goals to level the score. With time running out, Ting Fang caught another wayward St Margs attack and passed it to Sarah who in turn pass it to Vikki. With a short pause, Vikki changed the direction of the attack by passing a long pass to Olivia. At that point in time, Dayanara sprinted away from the Goal leaving the St Margs 'D' empty. With a quick pass in by Olivia, Liz took the ball while still in her stride and leaped forward to gain that much needed distance to be within her shooting range. She landed and aimed. Time stood still! Hearts pumping all around the court as she took aim. Whoosh! The ball went through the hoop in an instant taking away the fighting spirit of our greatest rivals. For the first time in the match TKP was in the lead. 21-20!

There was still time! The TKP seniors started their centre pass and did exactly the same thing. Whoosh! The ball went in like it was a metal that was attracted by the magnetic hoop. 22-20! Alas, few seconds later, the umpire blew for time. The TKP Seniors rejoiced and danced their way around the court like mad monkeys just released from their cages. Tears streamed down their eyes and they hugged each other like they have won the lottery. From the corner of my eye, I could see the trembling hands of both Mr Njoo and Mr Chua as they shook hands. Mr Njoo is 'human' after all. I'm sure beneath that cool oakley sunglasses he wore, tears must have been streaming down. the supporters too were ecstatic, many of the juniors were overjoyed with tears! What a day! From a non-netballer's perspective, I began to see the beauty of this game! The roller-coaster emotions that I felt throughout this match has certainly took its toll on me as I cried out in joy.

From a team who was down and out after the first round games, TKP Seniors were suddenly the favourites now to top this group and make it to the National Finals. I hoped I won't have to witness such games again as I might have a cardiac arrest and might have to write the next report in the hospital! For now, while the adrenalin is still pumping fast, I'll say, "TK, TK, fight, fight, fight!"

Another videographer who is always called upon to record important matches. He is polite, courteous and helpful. Recently confirmed as the President of the Student Leader Council (equivalent to the HEAD PREFECT), he epitomises what a true leader should be, unassuming and ever-ready to lend a helping hand. If I'm not wrong, he is also very popular with girls!

This is by far the most important match the Seniors had to play. This match will change the destiny of the Seniors. Not only must they win OLGC, but they must also score more goals than CHIJ(OLN), the team that they drew with on Wednesday (20-20). So, the Seniors' goal difference (for all three matches) must be more than OLN in order for TKP to be first in the group.

To make sure that the Seniors would play a good game, they went to Kallang Netball Center early for warm-ups and for the shooters to practise shooting. But Mr Njoo did not want the girls to be tired before the match as the hot weather (a typical afternoon) would. Finally, it was time for the match. Just by looking at the Seniors' faces, I could sense that they were determined on playing their best. The game started out smoothly for the Seniors as they jumped, passed, ran, caught and scored. They scored eight goals but let in two. They were doing well. Being energized by that, they played a better second quarter, the mid-fielders passing to the shooters; the shooters scoring goals; and the defenders defending well. During the third quarter, instead of being exhausted, the Seniors became stronger and thus faster. Within the ten minutes of the third quarter, they managed to score ten goals but in the meantime they still defended ferociously (any goal scored by OLGC would have cancelled out the goals TKP scored), which made it impossible for OLGC to score. It was the best quarter played by them! By the last quarter, I think that the netballers were tired already. However that did not affect the Seniors much. They just fought on till the end, trying to score as many goals as possible. In the end , the Seniors trashed OLGC 33-5. It was a good score as OLN's match with OLGC previously was 31-5. TKP scored two more points more than their rivals. But will that score enable them to win?

Sadly, OLN had a better score against Unity Primary--- 54-10 (TKP only manged 39-8 previously as Mr Njoo fielded all his reserves). Thus, TKP was second in the group. The Seniors will still proceed to the quarter-finals but unfortunately, they were grouped into the 'group of death' --- TKP (East-zone Champion) , Evergreen Primary (North-zone Champion) and St. Margaret's (South-zone Champion). Three Zone champions in one group! But I believe that TKP will make it through and be National Top 4 or even better!

We tried our best but we knew deep in our hearts we actually lost the first position in the group for the1st round on Wednesday against OLN. Watching the video clip of the match time and again, I just could not accept how we could not finish the game off!

To our disadvantage, we are now placed in a difficult group in the Q-finals. With three zone champions in the group, all our mathces from now on will be tight! No disrespect to Evergreen and Yumin, these two schools are our best bet to win so as to qualify for the semi-finals. Our first game will be against St Margs. A tough game for us and my feel is that the team that makes the least errors will triumph! I'll be crossing my fingers!

After beating St Margaret's on Wednesday morning, the juniors were euphoric but their journey in the nationals has only begun, they have many more tight matches to go so the juniors were reminded by Mr Njoo during the bus ride not to be complacent. They need to defeat their next opponent, Henry Park Pri to top their group.

The Juniors went to Kallang Netball Center early as usual and were ever ready when the match started. However, just like all the other matches the Juniors played in the Nationals so far, their first quarter was not very good. They let in four goals but only scored eight. It was their Archilles heel, the juniors cannot get into their rythm early in the game. Still, Henry Park fell behind 4-8. The second quarter (as usual) turned out for the better and the Juniors managed to double their previous score quickly with their quick passing and speedy runs down the line. With much difficulty, Henry Park only shot one goal. Motivated by their strong lead 16-5, the Juniors played better in the third quarter. The defence did a great job by not letting in any goals attempted by Henry Park at all. It was this display that prompted Mr Njoo to field the reserves in the 4th quarter. He took out Seak Im (GA) and replaced with Pepe, took out Rukmini (C) and made Xing Hui (WA) play the Centre and Jamie (GD) was asked to play WA with Josephine replacing her at defence. During the final quarter, I personally think that the defence was not as tight as the last two quarters (maybe it was due to the many changes). They 'allowed' Henry Park to shoot two goals. But the GA and GS scored five more shots and then the match was over with the score of 33-7.

After winning all three matches this week, TK Juniors are first in the group. So, we have the priviledge to draw for the quarter-final groupings. Mr Njoo wanted CHIJ (Kellock) to be in our next group because TKP has yet to play with Kellock, and it would be much better to pip our skills against them earlier rather than in the latter stages. So, with Mr Njoo's strategy and Miss Normala's Magic Hands (She was the one who drew the groupings), the Juniors got their dream group--- TK, CHIJ(Kellock), Marymount Primary and Pasir Ris Primary. All the best TKP Juniors in the quarter-finals.

Although the highlight of the 1st round matches was against St Margs and this match though important, was not critical to our advancement to the quarter-final stage. I still wanted the girls to play above themselves and show me that they are able to keep a high tempo and attack early in the game. However, the juniors showed their usual weakness and took a long time to settle down in the match, only leading Henry Park by 4 goals after the 1st quarter. After the usual 'hair-dryer treatment', the juniors started to find their feet in the 2nd quarter.

After the match, I reflected on why some of the players needed so long to settle down. Players like Seak Im and Rukmini were the main culprits, always making silly errors and sloppy passes which then affected the rest of the team. I guessed I 've to talk to them before the game and get them to do 'breathing exercises' to calm themselves down before the match. Hopefully, this will be the remedy toour problem.

Looking at the quarter-final draw, the only team that will pose the biggest problem to us will be CHIJ Kellock. It will be great to defeat them so that if we were to play with them again, the pychological advantage will be with TKP having beaten them earlier. The other two teams, Marymount and Pasir Ris, though weaker in strength, must still be taken seriously. At this stage of the competition, we must not underestimate anyone!

Introducing the TKP Netball Journalists

Just thought it will be great to present you our TKP netball Journalists who have worked very hard to give us up-to-date reports on the latest National Netball Championship.

They are:

Juliette Chia (P5 Olympism)

She takes pictures of the players in action and writes match reports. A talented pupil with multiple talents (plays the violin, organ and is a dancer who has represented school at the recent SYF and achieved a Gold Award). Besides that, she is also the Deputy Head of the Student Leader Council. Most importantly, she claims she is not good in sports!

Maverick Lim (P5 Olympism)

He takes footage of matches and entertains the netballers with his (lame) jokes and wisecracks. He is a talented goalkeeper who has represented TKP soccer team at the recent East Zone Competition and is the Sports Head in the Student Leader Council. Claims that he can run the 400m under 1 minute. Yet to see that happening! Besides that, he also brags that many girls like him (not shy!).

Kelly Kuek (P5 Olympism)

She is our Blog designer and she also takes footage of the matches as well as an avid photographer. She is a quiet worker but can be a handful when she is online...blabbers non-stop! Also a talented dancer who has achieved the SYF Gold award recently and a member of the IT department in the student leader council.
